The dry media worked as a stain on the surface of the paper, and yet stayed transparent so that earlier marks were still visible. This seemed promising, especially when working over\u00a0marks on white paper. \u00a0It opened the possibility to create soft color to replace the white background. \u00a0The effect might be to make it look like a plaster base, or an ancient wall.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.harveststudioonline.com\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/palimpsest-1-800-72.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-90\" src=\"http:\/\/www.harveststudioonline.com\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/palimpsest-1-800-72.jpg\" alt=\"palimpsest 1 800 72\" width=\"600\" height=\"436\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harveststudioonline.com\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/palimpsest-1-800-72.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.harveststudioonline.com\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/palimpsest-1-800-72-300x218.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We tried\u00a0a thin styrofoam,\u00a0often used\u00a0with school children to make stamps by pressing in the background area of a stamp image.\u00a0But the ink ran off the non-porous\u00a0surface of the paper, leaving a blotchy image.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, we began to cut stencils.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.harveststudioonline.com\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Cassidy-cutting-stencil-800-72.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-102\" src=\"http:\/\/www.harveststudioonline.com\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Cassidy-cutting-stencil-800-72.jpg\" alt=\"Cassidy cutting stencil 800 72\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harveststudioonline.com\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Cassidy-cutting-stencil-800-72.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.harveststudioonline.com\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Cassidy-cutting-stencil-800-72-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.harveststudioonline.com\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Cassidy-cutting-stencil-800-72-624x351.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As Cassidy cut a stencil, she realized that she could use the cut out part of the stencil paper as negative space, and paint with the brush around the cut out. Then she\u00a0realized she could fill in the image space with ink by holding down the stencil and brushing in the ink.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.harveststudioonline.com\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Cassidy-inking-stencil-800-72.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-103\" src=\"http:\/\/www.harveststudioonline.com\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Cassidy-inking-stencil-800-72.jpg\" alt=\"Cassidy inking stencil 800 72\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harveststudioonline.com\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Cassidy-inking-stencil-800-72.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.harveststudioonline.com\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Cassidy-inking-stencil-800-72-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.harveststudioonline.com\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Cassidy-inking-stencil-800-72-624x351.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As we began to imagine the possibilities, we considered\u00a0using\u00a0stamps and stencils to make geometric marks, and to cut organic forms based on the leaves of plants\u00a0from\u00a0the Flock house gardens. The contrast between organic forms and mathematical forms could represent nature in relationship to science.<\/p>\n<p>As we looked at the experimental pages, we wondered if there was a better way to create the stencil. \u00a0The thickness of the styrofoam made it possible for the ink to leak under the cut out area. \u00a0Maybe we need different brushes to apply the ink. \u00a0Maybe we can try making stencils with contact paper, which would be easy to cut (spontaneous) and thinner.<\/p>\n<p>We also want to combine the ink with oil pastel to take advantage of the resist nature of the oil pastel.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>May 29, 2014 &#8211; Meeting with Cassidy to explore ways to work with layers.
